Habitat for
Humanity Build Day
Monday, Nov. 12, 2007 8:30 am - 4:00 pm
(rescheduled from October 8th)
Please join us when we travel to Habitat for Humanity's site
in Northeast D.C. for another fun and worthwhile build day.
Anyone ages 16 and up is eligible to participate, and no
experience is required. Habitat will have its own construction
crew to supervise, provide instruction, and provide all
necessary tools. In previous years, our crew has had a great
time, working on a variety of tasks for the townhouses at
different stages of construction. If you haven't come out before
orsigned up already, you need to see what you're missing --
please sign up soon at the BJC office, first come, first served.

Sukkot in
April - April 29/30, 2006
Housing Renovation Project
On the weekend of April 29-30, teams led by
BHPC (on Saturday) and BJC (on Sunday), along with many other
churches and synagogues in the D.C. area, will be working on a
housing renovation project, through the auspices of Rebuilding
Together and Yachad, the Jewish Housing and Community
Development Corporation of Greater Washington, D.C. This year,
BJC and BHPC will be renovating a house owned by an elderly
woman in Olney, in need of a wide variety of interior and
exterior minor repairs and painting work. We can use help from
anyone aged 14 and up, with or without any skills (although
anyone with any plumbing or carpentry skills will be especially
appreciated!) If you're interested, please contact Gary
Sampliner at 301-279-7607 or
gary.sampliner@do.treas.gov.

Interfaith Partnership News
The House That BJC/BHPC Built
On Monday, February 16, many of us spent a cold winter
holiday with our Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church brothers and
sisters building houses with Habitat for Humanity. Nineteen of
us spent the day in Anacostia hammering, sawing, rasping,
shimming, gluing, eating and enjoying fellowship. We split
into four teams and worked on two houses. Eight houses are
currently up and have siding on them. Two houses are
completed, and six are under construction, including the
interfaith house. The whole project will take five years
and will eventually involve 53 houses. Seven Americorp
volunteers lead us through the process. These young people
come from all over the country to participate in this project.
We left BJC at 7:45 to get to Anacostia at 8:30, After a brief
orientation, we got right to work, putting up drywall.
We had a fabulous lunch together and learned the Habitat cheer.
Then back to work with the drywall again (lots of dust!).
We returned home tired, but refreshed, knowing that our labor
will help families in need of shelter. |
